What Are the Different Types of IT Help Desks? Not every IT help desk is built the same way. Organizations set them up differently depending on who they're serving, where the team sits, and how support is delivered. By audience: Internal help desks serve employees, handling account access, device issues, and software problems that affect day-to-day work. External help desks support customers and end users of your products, often running 24/7 and managing higher ticket volumes with more variable issue types. By staffing model: In-house help desks are fully employed by your organization. You have direct oversight of the team, processes, and culture. But, you bear the full cost of hiring, training, and tooling. Outsourced help desks contract support to a third-party provider. This is common when organizations need 24/7 coverage or specialist skills without the overhead of a full internal team. Hybrid models combine in-house staff for complex or sensitive issues with an outsourced team for after-hours or high-volume support.
By delivery model: On-site support involves a technician physically present at your location. This is still common in environments where hands-on hardware work is frequent. Remote support handles issues over phone, email, chat, or screen-sharing tools, without needing to be in the same building.
