
MTerra Solar: Powering the Philippines’ Clean Energy Future

The Philippines is taking another major step toward a cleaner and more resilient energy future through the MTerra Solar Project, a large-scale renewable energy development spanning areas of Nueva Ecija and Bulacan.Developed by Terra Solar Philippines Inc., the project combines solar photovoltaic generation with battery energy storage, allowing renewable electricity produced during daylight hours to be stored and dispatched when the grid needs additional power. Once fully completed, MTerra Solar is designed to deliver 3,500 MWp of solar capacity together with 4,500 MWh of battery energy storage.
A Major Milestone for Philippine Solar Energy
MTerra Solar reached an important milestone in 2026 with the completion and inauguration of its first phase. Phase 1 has energized 1,373 MW of solar photovoltaic capacity together with 825 MW of battery capacity, equivalent to 3,300 MWh of stored energy. The facility demonstrates how utility-scale solar can work alongside energy storage instead of relying solely on electricity generation while the sun is shining. Batteries can store part of the energy produced during the day and make it available during periods of higher electricity demand.
Why Battery Storage Matters
One of the defining features of MTerra Solar is its integrated Battery Energy Storage System or BESS.Solar generation naturally changes throughout the day. Battery storage helps address this variability by capturing available solar energy and releasing it when required. This can help improve the dependability of renewable energy, support grid stability, and make solar power more useful beyond peak sunlight hours. For a growing electricity system such as the Philippines’, combining renewable generation with energy storage represents an important part of building a more flexible and diversified power supply.
Supporting the Luzon Grid
MTerra Solar has already begun supplying renewable electricity to the Luzon grid. The project's first phase is designed to support a 600 MW mid-merit power supply agreement with Meralco, while its battery systems provide additional flexibility in delivering stored renewable energy. As electricity demand continues to increase, developments of this scale can help diversify the country's generation mix and reduce dependence on imported fuels.
More Than a Solar Farm
Large renewable energy developments can also create opportunities beyond electricity generation. The MTerra Solar project has supported employment, technical training, community programs, public safety initiatives, and infrastructure improvements within its host communities in Nueva Ecija and Bulacan. MGenThe project is also exploring agrivoltaics, where agricultural activities and solar generation can coexist on the same land. Research conducted with Central Luzon State University is examining how crops may be cultivated around and beneath solar panels while maintaining productive land use.
